Here’s the “Skinny” on Getting Skinny

I’m a woman over 40, a mother, and a business owner, so this should come as no surprise: weight loss has been a years-long struggle for me.

I’ve tried dieting. I’ve joined exercise programs and gyms—even hired a personal trainer. I tried cleanses, intermittent fasting, and more approaches than I can count. But for me, it always seemed to come back to one thing: I love food, I enjoy wine, and maintaining a calorie deficit was difficult.

What Kept Me From Losing Weight

I enjoy a glass of wine after a long day, love pizza, and live for girls’ nights out with my best friends. Unfortunately, those habits can make it difficult to consistently cut calories.

After a major life change, I gained 30 pounds. I continued working out, added cardio through pickleball, and started cutting out alcohol during the week—but the stubborn scale wouldn’t budge.

I had always tried to eat relatively healthy: a small, protein-packed breakfast, salad for lunch, and protein and vegetables for dinner. But cravings, portions, and simply enjoying food often got in the way.

I looked back at photos of myself in my 20s and 30s and wished I could feel that comfortable and confident in my body again.

I had tried the traditional approaches. I started wondering if there was another option.

How I Discovered Medical Weight Loss

Around this same time, I was pursuing another dream: opening a concierge wellness company offering IV hydration and wellness therapy, medical weight management, and concierge medical care.

With my nursing background and a medical provider experienced in family practice and aesthetics, our goal was to create something different—personalized medical and wellness care with ongoing support.

When my business partner suggested that I consider medically supervised weight loss before we incorporated it into our practice, I was skeptical.

I had always believed that hard work, dieting, and deprivation should be enough to get me back into my jeans.

I knew people who had tried procedures, prescription medications, cosmetic treatments, and countless diets. Some lost weight, but keeping it off was often the hardest part.

And did I mention that I love to eat?

I spend a lot of time in the kitchen and genuinely enjoy good food and fresh ingredients. At one point in my life, I even owned a restaurant and bar. I appreciate good wine and craft cocktails, and I’ve always said I’d rather enjoy my life than spend it feeling deprived.

But I missed my jeans.

More importantly, I missed feeling comfortable in my own body.

So, after consulting with my medical provider, I decided to give medically supervised weight loss a try.

My Experience With Medical Weight Loss

After receiving my prescribed treatment from the pharmacy, I administered my first injection as directed.

Day one was uneventful. I didn’t notice much change in my appetite.

But shortly afterward, I began noticing something very different.

I wasn’t thinking about food the way I normally did.

At lunchtime, I prepared a large salad with tuna and quickly realized I couldn’t finish it. Later that evening, I wasn’t particularly interested in dinner—something that was very unusual for me.

Over the following days, that pattern continued.

I still ate. I still enjoyed food. But I felt satisfied with much smaller portions.

Foods that previously triggered strong cravings suddenly didn’t have the same hold on me.

Even pizza was different. Instead of automatically reaching for several slices, I could have one and feel satisfied.

For me, one of the most significant changes wasn’t simply eating less.

It was no longer feeling like food was constantly on my mind.

A Different Approach to Weight Management

Medical weight management isn’t simply about eating less.

Certain prescription treatments can affect pathways involved in appetite, fullness, digestion, and blood sugar regulation. For appropriate patients, these effects may make it easier to feel satisfied with smaller portions and support healthier eating habits.

Throughout my treatment, my medical provider and I discussed my appetite, progress, goals, and any side effects. My treatment was adjusted as medically appropriate based on my individual response.

Over time, I began seeing changes on the scale and in the way my clothes fit.

Something else changed, too.

I found myself making healthier choices more naturally.

When you’re not constantly battling cravings or thinking about your next meal, choosing a smaller portion or passing on something you don’t really want becomes much easier.

For me, medical weight management wasn’t a replacement for healthy habits.

It was a tool that finally made those habits feel achievable.

A Whole New Weight Loss Lifestyle

As friends and family began noticing my weight loss, they naturally asked what I was doing.

At first, I was hesitant to tell people that I was using medical treatment to help manage my weight. There can still be a stigma surrounding medical weight loss.

Eventually, I realized there was no reason to feel embarrassed about seeking medical support for a health goal.

Weight management is complex.

Genetics, hormones, metabolism, medical conditions, medications, lifestyle, sleep, stress, nutrition, and activity can all play a role.

It isn’t always as simple as “eat less and exercise more.”

For appropriate patients, medically supervised weight management may be one part of a comprehensive approach to achieving and maintaining a healthier weight.

My experience completely changed the way I think about weight loss.

I no longer view it simply as a matter of willpower or deprivation.
